Baby Kartini...

Here are the pics...

Men in Black (update)

NZRU pays tribute to Marty Holah14/08/2007
The New Zealand Rugby Union today paid tribute to Chiefs and Waikato stalwart Marty Holah, who has announced that he will join Welsh club Ospreys later this year.
Holah will join the club at the conclusion of Waikato’s Air New Zealand Cup campaign.
New Zealand Rugby Union Deputy Chief Executive Steve Tew said the 30-year-old flanker went with the organisation’s blessing.
“Marty epitomises professionalism and humility and he goes with our best wishes. He has served his province, franchise and country with pride and distinction and we wish him all the best as he embarks on a new chapter of his rugby career,” Tew said.
“He is a terrific person and player and there is no doubt that his experience and leadership will be missed at all levels. But Marty feels the time is right for him to experience a new rugby environment and we thank him for his outstanding service to New Zealand rugby,” Tew added.

Rugby: Somerville off to World Cup
Tue, 14 Aug 2007 02:06p.m.
Greg Somerville's 'old head' gave him the extra time he needed to join the All Blacks mission to win the Rugby World Cup.
Coach Graham Henry's confirmed the Canterbury front-rower in his 30 man squad today - after recovering from achilles and eye injuries.
It's been a frustrating time for 29 year old Somerville, who's been hanging out for the last four years for another crack at rugby's biggest prize.

I have deliberately not mentionned the 'accusation' from Bernard Laporte and its consequences in NZ, for the simple reason that drug-testing programmes are currently an easy answer when any French sports-person explain his/her defeat.
I won't join this 'cold war' for personal reasons (you are innocent as long as you are not proved guilty) and also because the World Drug testing Association (AMA) and its rules are complicated enough for real experts -so imagine for me...
I have actually noticed that none of you had mentioned this 'battle' but I wanted you to know that there is no taboo here, and if you want to talk about this, just use the comment section below.
- l'AMA (ou Agence Mondiale Anti dopage) a des reglements tellement compliques, avec des produits dopants acceptes, des produits non dopants refuses,... c'est tellement difficila pour les medecins du sport, que je vous conseille de meme pas chercher a comprendre (c'est pas francais, si?) ;
Postez vos commentaires ci-apres.

All Blacks farewell Christchurch on stuff.co.nz (pictures by Miana and Izzy -thank you)
http://www.stuff.co.nz/4155075a1823.html
By REBECCA TODD - The Press
Monday, 6 August 2007 Victoria Square was almost filled to the brim today as All Black well wishers jostled for a shot of their favourite player.Encouraged by the sunny weather, around 2000 people packed into the square for Christchurch's farewell to the world cup team.
The Rugby World Cup 2007 begins in exactly a month today in France. Cellphones and digital cameras were out in force as All Blacks captain Richie McCaw spoke of the team's hopes for bringing home the trophy."This is our first time together as a world cup squad and the excitement within the squad is really building, we can't wait to get over there and get stuck in," he said to a cheer from the crowd.Coach Graham Henry described Canterbury as the backbone of New Zealand rugby. "I know they will go to France and give it their best shot. I think they will win the cup, I can't guarantee it, but I have got that feeling," he said. Mayor Garry Moore took the opportunity to make a joking bid for the 2011 World Cup final."We are all with you and we look forward to you bringing the cup home so when the final of the World Cup is held in Christchurch in 2011, we will be defending it on our own patch." Christchurch has been painting the town black in the build up to the French event and in the hope of gaining a semi-final in the 2011 World Cup by putting the city's rugby spirit on show.
Former captain Reuben Thorne was all in favour of a 2011 semi-final being held in Canterbury."I think there would be plenty of support, but it all depends on the stadium and if we can get that up to scratch," he said.Christ College student Calum Fisher was on his way to getting the whole team's autographs with five minutes to go.The 13-year-old said he would be staying up late to watch the World Cup games and would love to see a semifinal here in 2011."I would definitely watch it," he said.
The article has just forgotten to mention the Richie Girls Army Tour in NZ in 2011... and of course, the Richie Girls will be very happy to attend the 2011 semi final at the Jade Stadium in Christchurch...
ps : Izzy just wanted to tell us that Richie was not sleeping (see picture on the right), he was just singing the national anthem.
Thank you for this remark, Izzy ;)

Misc news
As the ABs have met for their first conditioning camp before the World Cup, there is not much to say (training, sleeping, training, sleeping... but it's for the Nation's sake!)
But even when there is not much to say, there are still things to say!
******
Here is a video Izzy sent last week : Richie and Corey Flynn meeting the kids at Ronnie's House in the Southern Island. Another great champion that I like is also involved into the Ronnie's House... but in Canada (Alexandre Despatie, diving)
These men are great champions but they also have a big heart and that's why we love them...

To promote the learning/teaching of French around the globe, the French-speaking channel TV5 monde has launched a campaign around rugby with foreign players from the French championship.
Like Tony Marsh, Mike James, Pieter de Villers, Finau Maka,... Learn how to 'parler rugby'!

Of course, it's impossible! It's tough enough for a foreigner to be (just) the head coach of a Super Rugby team, so imagine when it's for the national team...

All Blacks past it: Jones (on rugbyheaven)
http://www.rugbyheaven.smh.com.au/articles/2007/07/31/1185647887609.html
Marc Hinton
Tuesday, July 31, 2007
Former Wallabies coach Eddie Jones, poised to take on a controversial World Cup role with the Springboks, says the All Blacks are a team in decline, but they may still be good enough to win the global crown for the first time in 20 years. Jones is considering a role with South Africa at the upcoming World Cup in France, a state of affairs that has the Australian scene running amok with conspiracy theories. The former Wallabies coach, who was replaced after the 2005 tour north, has just finished a one-week "advisory" stint with Jake White and the Springboks. He says he is "having discussions" with the Springboks camp about extending that relationship to take in the World Cup, a situation which seems certain to occur as he transitions into a permanent role with Saracens in the English premiership.
If the right detail is thrashed out Jones will help guide the Springboks through a campaign where the All Blacks clearly present themselves as the side to beat in France and the UK through September and October. But, according to Fast Eddie, Graham Henry's men in black present less of an imposing obstacle than they did a year or two ago. Jones says he agrees with the theory floated by another ex-Wallabies coach Bob Dwyer that the New Zealanders are on the slippery slope.
"I think they're still the favourites," Jones told Radio Sport in an interview from South Africa. "What the problem has been, if you look at New Zealand in 2004, 2005 and 2006, they were probably five-to-six per cent better than everyone else. Now they're probably one-to-two per cent better than anyone else. That difference has decreased, not dissimilar to England in 2003 when they probably hit a peak in June and then were just able to hang on."New Zealand, as Bob Dwyer made the point in May, have already hit their peak but they've still got enough left to be rated the best side in the world and an outstanding chance of winning the World Cup."Jones, who quit as Queensland Reds coach after a shocking Super 14 campaign earlier this year, told the station his personal observation was that Henry's side still had something up their sleeves ahead of the global tournament. In fact, he wouldn't be surprised to see them hit their stride when the whip gets cracked in October.
"They've been idling a little bit. Graham Henry is a bit like a racehorse trainer returning a stayer for the Melbourne Cup. He doesn't want him peaking a month before, he wants them peaking at the World Cup. I think you'll find the All Blacks, when it comes to the World Cup, will be a much more cohesive unit than they've been over the last couple of months."In terms of the angst he's causing in Australia with his move into the Boks camp, Jones defended his latest role and said he was particularly surprised to hear such direct criticism coming from reborn CEO John O'Neill.O'Neill has labelled Jones' move as disloyal and "mercenary" and the Wallabies coaching staff have weighed in by saying they're concerned that he may offer trade secrets to the South Africans that could help them beat the Wallabies should they meet at the Cup.
"I've moved on now, we're moving up to England ... I don't see myself being disloyal at all," Jones told Radio Sport. "What I'm trying to do is become a better coach. In terms of giving away secrets from the Wallabies, I haven't coached them since November 2005, and as is well-documented, when I coached the Reds in the Super 14 I basically had no communication with John Connolly so I don't know where I'd be getting this secret information from."Jones said his link with the South Africans came about through his friendship with head coach Jake White and that he'd been working on adding some "subtlety" to their well-versed power game. "You see it with the All Blacks who play a powerful game but when they get into a bit of subtlety and some clever moves they become even more dangerous."But he still believed the World Cup would be won by the side with the strongest defence. "I don't think South Africa are going to go anywhere away from their natural game. All we're trying to do is add something that makes the opposition think a little bit more.
"I'm just trying to add value," he said. "The difference between the top four sides in the world is probably anywhere between 2% and down to half a percent. So if you can add that quarter of a percent here or there it can make a difference."Jones also labelled the Springboks as the biggest threat to the All Blacks at the upcoming Cup. "But it's now about what side can improve the most. They're small increments, but whatever side improves the most over the next two months will be the side knocking on the door of the World Cup final."Finally, he couldn't resist a dig at O'Neill who appeared to be adopting selective nationalism when it came to the international game. The new Aussie boss is apparently still hot on the trail of Robbie Deans to take over the Wallabies, apparently even prepared to allow him a farewell campaign with the Crusaders before taking on the job."Can you believe John O'Neill even contemplating that after the spray he's given me? I think that's quite humorous ... someone should take [him] up on those comments," added Jones, his trademark smirk no doubt prevalent.
*****

Here is Richie's blog, but we are human beings, we have feelings, and sometime our feeling is sympathy, pain,...
On behalf of all the Richie Girls (and readers of this blog and rugby fans), I would like to send our best wishes to the Springbok Pierre Spies.
Get well soon, Pierre!
And if you ever need a nurse or someone to talk to or anything, I know someone who could help you out ;)

All Black news...before the conditionning camps in Christchurch on Monday
Black humour in off-beat national anthemWarren Gamble
A shadowy Auckland figure is behind the online success of a quirky new national anthem sung by a fictitious central Otago men's choir. The clip of God defend the All Blacks by the Matakanui Men's Choir shows everyone from James Cook, Sir Edmund Hillary and Michael Joseph Savage singing the national anthem with All Black names substituted. An animated James K. Baxter, Helen Clark and even David Bain belt out verses such as "Bernie Fraser, Michael Jones/Frank Bunce, Grant Fox, Joe Rocokoko/ Zinzan Brooke, Richard Loe/ Mils Muliaina".The video features on popular networking websites You Tube and My Space. It is for sale on New Zealand online music site Amplifier and has proved popular on Fairfax news websites. The video is backed by a Mattakanui Men's Choir website detailing its formation in 1958 so Central Otago men could "pursue their shared joy of singing".But no one in the former goldmining town and small farming settlement 11km north-west of Omakau has heard of the choir and its leader, "wool classer Trev Smith"_ because they do not exist.Yesterday "Trev Smith" revealed that while he grew up in Central Otago, he now lived in Auckland, where he was involved in web design and music. The song's creator, who did not want to give his real name, said the idea for an All Blacks-inspired anthem occurred at a party.Several months ago he got 20 friends and acquaintances together, hired an Auckland school hall and recorded the new anthem. He said initially the video featured pictures of the named All Blacks but he decided to take the idea a step further with a video featuring famous New Zealanders. He wanted to remain anonymous because not everyone would appreciate making fun of the anthem or national icons.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z1Etbh_EgBE=> on the left is an article sent by Izzy a couple of weeks ago : women tend to visit this Christchurch café more often when the ABs are in town -which will be the case next week ;)******Kiwi humour, le retour!

The Richie Girls : we need you!
Hello everybody!(boys, girls, men and women : you are all part of the "Richie Girls")This morning, I posted an article written by someone who didn't call Richie a cheat (THANK YOU AGAIN!)After reading this article, Chill (our South African favorite reporter/spy/fan...) suggested we should all defend Richie. So here is the thing : Like we did for the article 'Baby Richie turns one', you will all send me your support message on the theme 'Richie is not a cheat' ; and I'll publish them in a common (or two) article(s).
***********
Notes
************
*I won't change your words, they belong to you and it was what you meant when you wrote your message. Don't worry, I'm in favour of Freedom of Speech.*You have 2 weeks (so until August 15th) to send me your message (I also accept pics) atmarykoala@hotmail.fr*I won't take part of this common message for two simple reasons :- I have already done it here and on my blog -and I will do it again!!!- I don't have enough rugby knowledge to support my theory ;)
******
End
******
This blog is Richie's but is also yours. May you all feel free to send me anything you want (even if it's only two lines, as long as they show your support,...)Thanks a lot for your contribution to this blog (not only for this blog, but just for being 'here' THANK YOU!)
ps : even if I have only one message, I'll publish it ;)ps 2: how can people be upset because of this lovely kid (I'm sorry, that's -by far- Richie's best picture ever! and he already had a cup ... hahaha...)

Phony War
http://totalflanker.blogspot.com/2007/07/phony-war.htmlWith not much more than a month to go before the start of Rugby World Cup 2007 the phony war is now upon us. With hosts France and the big three south of the equator having named their squads (after a largely pointless and surprisingly mediocre Tri Nations it must be said) there's not much for them to do now but sit and wait and argue the toss over whether Richie McCaw is the greatest player living or the biggest cheat in the game.Yes, while England scratch their heads and attempt to cobble together a squad of old timers, fresh faced kids and the walking wounded, while Wales debate whether Gavin Henson has the appropriate haircut to merit selection for the Welsh squad and while Scottish rugby continues to implode, the Southern Hemisphere have decided that bickering is the best way to warm up for France.Whether it's Jake White's decision to take a shadow squad to Australia and New Zealand, Lote Tuqiri's suspension, Graham Henry's axeing of Piri Weepu and Troy Flavell, Bob Skinstad's inclusion in the Springbok squad or Eddie Jones' "defection" to the South African ranks, there's been plenty of controversy in the last few weeks and plenty for the three countries to argue about, either with each other or amongst themselves. The loudest protests, however, appear to be about how much the All Black skipper gets away with at the breakdown. Eddie Jones (spokesperson, it now appears, for both Australian and South African interests) claimed that respect for McCaw's captaincy was being eroded by his actions, both Jake White and John Connolly have chipped in to voice their disquiet and Springbok stand-in skipper Johann Muller added his considerable intellect to the debate by proclaiming loudly "IT'S NOT FAIR!"My take on this is simple. Richie McCaw is currently the world's best openside and possibly the world's best player. He is also the best at cheating. By cheating I of course mean that at the breakdown he knows exactly what he can do and what he can get away with, how marginally offside he can be without it being obvious, when to use his hands etc etc. If he wasn't very good at it he wouldn't be the best flanker alive - he'd be second best to George Smith or to Schalk Burger or to whoever had learned to get way with more. It's what flankers do.******On behalf of all the Richie Girls (ans Boys!), I'd like to thank the author of this article for sharing our view ; may your arguments be read by Richie's haters!Just like that, this is not Richie's best profile but that was the image that illustrated the article -we can not be good on every field ;)************Au nom de toutes les Richie Girls (et des Richie Boys aussi!), je tenais a remercier l'auteur de cet article ; que ses arguments puissent etre entendus par les detracteurs de Richie!

Blacks good enough
Duncan Johnstone
Sunday, July 29, 2007
DAVID Kirk, the only All Blacks captain to lift the William Webb Ellis Cup, believes Graham Henry's squad is good enough to end New Zealand's 20-year drought at rugby's showpiece event.
But Kirk, who led the All Blacks to World Cup glory on home soil in 1987, conceded they still had to deal with the pressure of expectation, expanding their game as the tournament unfolds, settling on a midfield combination, and getting aggressive performances from a pack he rates the best in the game.
"The players are definitely good enough to win the World Cup," he said. "Whether we have the right plan we will know as the tournament unfolds. The preparation has been good, I think they have selected the right players. But in the end you have to do it on the day when it really matters." Kirk conceded the All Blacks had not been on top of their game this year. He believed they had been doing enough to win games and major trophies without giving too much away before the tournament.
"I certainly think he [Henry] doesn't want to be playing the best rugby now," Kirk said."It's a real trap to go into a World Cup playing brilliantly and then find you fall a bit flat."
Kirk said the 2007 side's preoccupation with razzle-dazzle rugby would succeed only if the forwards laid the platform for such adventurous play.http://www.rugbyheaven.smh.com.au/articles/2007/07/28/1185339323438.html

In his interviews, Richie often remind the journalists the (huge) number of sleep-less nights he's had since the semi final lost against Australia in 2003, thinking about 'Why did the ABs lose?"
But nobody has ever asked him how many times he has been dreaming of becoming the new David Kirk -or better, the first Richie Mccaw (or, as Rose said once : King Richard VII) ...

All Blacks on the slide: British media
Duncan Johnstone
Saturday, July 28, 2007
The northern scribes are rounding on the All Blacks ahead of the World Cup, suggesting Graham Henry's side is on the slide just when it matters most.
The All Blacks' patchy Tri Nations form hasn't been lost on the men with the pens in Britain as rugby's showpiece draws closer.
The old question of New Zealand's timing with their form and game-plan is again being raised as the All Blacks look to end a 20-year drought at the World Cup in France in September and October.
Even former England flyhalf Stuart Barnes, normally a warm admirer of the All Blacks, is starting to point the finger.
Writing a column in the respected Times newspaper, Barnes said: "Apart from 10 magnificent minutes in Durban, the All Blacks have slipped from a position of overwhelming superiority to merely the leaders of the pack.
"The New Zealand of 2005 and 2006 would have waltzed the 2007 World Cup; this side remain favourites but the gap in the field appears to be narrowing.
"New Zealand had a vice-like mental grip on the rest of the world, such was their superiority but the evidence of this (Tri Nations) series of rugby suggests that the odds-on favourites are now only such a short price because of recent history. World Cups are won in the here and now and while no side is exactly improving at an exponential rate, New Zealand has a look of slippage about them.
"This New Zealand side has an attack stringing itself like pearls all across the pitch. All too often forwards are getting in the way of the backs and Dan Carter is losing his running edge because defenders, not altogether surprisingly, tend to concentrate on him when they look up and see Tony Woodcock and Chris Jack, representatives of the front five, standing opposite - flat and unthreatening.
"Incisive attack has been replaced by looping and lateral ball retention. It could yet behead the All Blacks' hopes before what has long seemed a likely coronation. The change in their game is regressive. The accuracy of first phase moves has disappeared and with it their aura.
"New Zealand have the most talented squad of players in the world - there's no doubt about it - but then again so they did in the lead-up to the 1995, 1999 and 2003 World Cups, none of which they won."
Former Welsh flanker John Taylor is another who is starting to question that aura of invincibility the All Blacks have generated over the past three years as they reclaimed the N.o 1 world ranking and marched through Europe unbeaten under the guidance of Henry.
"A third straight Tri Nations, Bledisloe Cup winners for the sixth year in a row, a world record 26 consecutive home victories - take those statistics at face value and you would have to say New Zealand have confirmed their status as overwhelming favourites for Rugby World Cup," said Taylor in his column for Scrum.com.
"I'm not so sure. The other would be contenders will all have noted some chinks in the All Blacks' armour; somehow they don't appear quite so invincible - I think their Tri Nations rivals and the European teams will have been encouraged by the events of the last five weeks.
"Australia's victory in Melbourne, South Africa's front-running for an hour in Durban and the All Blacks' total of only 8 tries in 4 matches show the gap has narrowed considerably.
"The air of total dominance has gone; you never felt it was only a matter of time before the All Blacks suddenly upped the pace and ripped the opposition defence apart; you never believed they were in a class of their own. At this stage last year the rest of the world feared just that."
Taylor believes the loss of Tana Umaga through retirement has been a major blow to the All Blacks. And with no successor permanently anointed, it's hard to argue with him on that front.
Here's what he said about that in his column: "I am certain Henry wanted Umaga to remain as captain until after the World Cup and New Zealand's attacking edge behind the scrum has been severely blunted by his retirement from international rugby. McCaw might be his natural successor but he is very much a leader of the pack. Nobody has been able to assume Umaga's leadership mantle in the back division.
"New Zealand backlines have always been at their most effective when they have had a focal figure to call the shots. They are of a type - big, hard as teak but with a razor sharp rugby brain. Frank Bunce did the job in the early and mid 90s, Daryl Gibson carried it on and then Umaga took it to new heights.
"Without Umaga they are definitely not as powerful in attack (or defence). It is yet another ray of hope; New Zealand are definitely not as far ahead as they were this time last year but they are still the team to beat."http://www.rugbyheaven.smh.com.au/articles/2007/07/28/1185339322101.html
